Research and Development
Laser Cables modern and well-equipped Research and Development Laboratory
is staffed by a group of highly trained Engineers and Technologists
with a wide experience in the field of Cables. These engineers and
technologists have carved out a career in the studies and applications
of cables and electrical transmission and are familiar with the
requirements of many different cable constructions.
Laser Cable’s research team is engaged
in the exploration of new ways of improving the existing products.
Customer’s requirements and feedback information’s are
studied for possible development of new constructions to meet the
ever-increasing demands created by import substitution.
As a result of the planned development efforts, utilizing their
own know-how and research work Laser Cables have manufactured various
PVC compounds suitable for use at temperatures as low as –55oC
and as high as 105oC.
Together with the most advanced testing equipments available,
we are able to offer the users of Laser Cable’s products the
assurance of the highest quality and strict adherence to the required
specifications. The facilities and experience of Laser Cable’s
research and technical team are available to you for the development
of any cable to meet any of your specific applications.
The tests on PVC insulated
cables are divided mainly in three groups:
1. Tests at raw material stage
2. Production shop preventive tests, i.e. process inspection.
3. Finished Cable Tests
Tests
at Raw Materials Stage
Laser Cables PVC insulated cables are manufactured from quality
raw materials, which are tested in our laboratory, strictly according
to our work specifications. For, PVC insulated cables, the raw materials
and tests generally conducted are as follows:
1. Aluminium / Copper rod: Density, conductivity, tensile strength
and chemical composition.
2. PVC Compound : Density, tensile strength, elongation at break,
volume resistivity, ageing, hot deformation and shrinkage.
3. Steel strip/ wire : Dimensions, tensile strength, elongation
at break, torsion, resistivity, zinc coating and winding test.
Production shop preventive tests, i.e. process
inspection.
The process control tests are carried out at every stage
of manufacture for checking the adequate cable manufacturing process
and taking necessary steps for eliminating deficiencies. The control
tests are to ascertain that the cables manufactured at our works
are of the desired qualities and comply to the standards and the
technical specifications.
The
quality of Laser Cables is maintained at high levels due to the
latest processing technologies with which these cables are manufactured.
The following are the salient features of the process inspection
carried out by us for PVC Cables.
1) Wire Drawing:
:: Wire diameter and
surface
:: Wrapping and tensile
strength test on Aluminum wires
:: Annealing test
on copper wire
:: Resistance
2)
Conductor Stranding
:: Dimensions
:: Surface and shape
of Conductors
:: Lay and direction
of lay for stranding
:: Pre-spiral lay
for shaped conductor
:: D.C. Resistance
:: No wires in each
conductor
3)
Insulation
:: Dimension of core
:: Thickness
:: Surface
:: Spark test, high
voltage test and IR test
4)
Laying Up
:: Sequence of cores
:: Direction of laying
up and lay
:: Circularity of
cable
:: Dia. Over laid
up cores
:: Application of
fillers in the interstices
5)
Inner Sheath
:: Surface
:: Concentricity
:: Thickness
:: Dia. Of inner
sheath
6)
Armouring
:: Lay and direction
of lay of armouring wires / strips
:: No: of strips
/ wires
:: Uniformity of
application and dia. Over armouring
:: Dimensions of
Strip/ wire
7)
Outer sheath
:: Thickness
:: Concentricity
and dia. Over sheath
:: Surface
:: Embossing with
requisite information on outer sheath
Finished
Cable Tests
The finished cables tests of PVC insulated cables can be divided
into two categories.
:: Routine tests
to which each and every length of cable is subjected
:: Type tests to
which samples of batches of cables are subjected. The samples for
these tests are selected as per the scheme laid down in ISI.
Routine
Tests
:: Voltage tests:
Each core of the cable is tested at room temperature at 3 KV a.c.r.m.s
for a duration of 5 minutes.
:: Conductor resistance
test: The D.C Resistance of each conductor is measured at room temperature
and the results are
corrected at 20oC to check the compliance with the values
specified in IS: 8130-1984
Type Tests
::
Water Immersion voltage tests: samples form the cores taken from
the finished cables are tested at 6 KV a.c.r.m.s for 5 minutes after
immersion in water bath at 60+/- 3C for 24 hours. The cores are
then subsequently tested for 240 hours in the same water bath at
the same temperatures.
